God Damn – Lucky 7

LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

Much of Velvet Sheep’s heart lies in a place people called Grunge. Yeah it was a buzz word coined by a journalist, and one the bands it lumped together weren’t exactly enamoured with but the truth is the movement produced some of the best rock music since the 70s, whilst simultaneously killing off the vacuous hair metal of the 80s. It’s also good to know there’s still lot of great new grunge music out there, so it’s with utmost pleasure we introduce to you the excellent God Damn, and if describing the band as “Black Sabbath having a screaming row with Nirvana” doesn’t get you excited then I proclaim you dead inside.

Comprised of drummer Ash Weaver and singer/guitarist Thom Edward, Ash has provided us with a Lucky 7 that doesn’t disappoint – unless of course you were hoping for obscure music choices that have no discernible influence on the band, in that case you’ll be extremely disappointed by this tasty selection of tracks, so rockingly good that if they’re not already in your collection you need to get your priorities right and get downloading now.

1. Queens Of The Stone Age – “A Song for the Dead”
In my opinion, this is one of the greatest rock songs of all time. As well as generally enjoying listening to it, I also took a lot of influence from this song growing up, Grohl’s drumming is immense. The album this song is taken from, ‘Songs For The Deaf’, is also definitely up there for me in my favourite albums of all time. I think, if we had to follow a blueprint of any band, QOTSA would be ‘that’ band for me.

2. Led Zeppelin – “Rock n Roll”
I love this song! The intro, the drum solo at the end, it’s John Bonham at his best. One of my favourite bands of all time and two of them (Robert Plant and John Bonham) happen to be from the Midlands too, dead proud of that.

3. Nirvana – “Territorial Pissings”
Nirvana are clearly a huge influence on us, as well as lot of other bands too. The reason being, they went against the grain, they were the punk band when rock music had been getting a bit toothless. Their ability to write simple songs that are just so ridiculously catchy still blows my mind to this day. I could have chosen more than just one Nirvana song in this list, but I chose this one, it’s a belter and, if you’re lucky enough, you may have seen us play a rare cover version of this.

4. The Beatles – “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”
I could have pretty much chosen any record by The Beatles. They were always so far ahead of their time with everything they did, they always pushed the barrier and completely changed music. This one in particular is so clever in how it’s structured and I’m a sucker for a bit of that dreamy psych from time to time.

5. Kings Of Leon – “Spiral Staircase”
‘Youth And Young Manhood’ is an incredible album, I remember hearing about Kings Of Leon through the NME as a kid and just being amazed by these four stupidly cool blokes with a sound to match. I saw them at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton back in 2004, still one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, I was of an age where rock stars didn’t seem like real people and I was in awe of them. This is one of my favourite tracks by them, so raw, proper rock-n-roll.

6. Arctic Monkeys – “Pretty Visitors” 
A pop song with a metal riff in the middle, this is a great track from another amazing album. Arctic Monkeys have been the band I feel I’ve grown up with, their sound seems to have matured as I’ve gotten older which has always made them relevant to me. I can listen to their earlier material too, and it always brings back good memories from my teenage years.

LUCKY 7: God Damn – “Sing This”
This is the first single off our forthcoming second album ‘Everything Ever’. It’s a fun song for people to enjoy, and sing “Shalala” to their hearts content. This song is a perfect example of what to expect on the new album, make sure you check it out.
