LUCKY 7 IS THE FEATURE WHERE WE ASK ARTISTS TO NAME THEIR 6 FAVOURITE SONGS BY OTHERS, AND A LUCKY 7TH SONG OF THEIR OWN…
Since their inception in 2006, Nottingham’s The Hip Priests have released a mighty thirty 7” singles, four albums, two compilations and three EPs by various independent labels from all over Europe & the USA. Fiercely independent and tirelessly driven, the ‘Priests have preached their high energy sermon of misanthropy, hate and contempt across numerous tours of the UK, Europe and USA and made countless rapturously received festival appearances.
But what are the songs and who are the artists that have influenced the Hip Priests rock n roll sermons? Bad Tattoo finds out from guitarist Austin Rocket…
1. Senseless Things – Busload To Bingo
One of the best and most underrated bands to ever come out of the UK. I love everything they did but the early stuff is perfection and this tune is one of my favourites, frantic and absolutely buzzing with energy.
2. The Hellacopters – Gotta Get Some Action (Right Now)
First time I heard this was a life changer, the perfect mix of everything I love about punk and rock in one song. Incredible riff, absolutely filthy production and played with the fury of Motorhead.
3. Leatherface – Springtime
Incredible guitar playing, beautiful lyrics and Frankie’s gruff vocals are the icing on the cake. Could’ve picked any song off this album (Mush) cos every single one is amazing.
4. Zeke – God Of GSXR
Like being punched in the face repeatedly. I can listen to Zeke on a loop and never get bored. Brutal perfection.
5. Home Front – Nation
The album’s barely left my turntable since I got it and this tune is my current favourite. Features Cal from The Chisel for some extra bollocks!
6. Civic – Born In The Heat
The latest in a long line of incredible Aussie bands. A perfect mix of The Saints/Radio Birdman but with their own spin on it too. Can’t wait to see them live.
LUCKY 7: The Hip Priests – Can’t Abide With Me
We released this as a 7” before recording the album but all agreed it was so good that it had to go on the album as well. One of my favourite songs to play live too and contains the classic line “I’d talk to myself but I’m a cunt too!”
