Mother Mother, formed in 2005 amidst the eclectic cultural backdrop of Quadra Island, British Columbia, the band’s genesis is as intriguing as their genre-defying sound. Initially conceived as a duo featuring brother-sister duo Ryan and Molly Guldemond, Mother Mother soon expanded to include multi-instrumentalists Jasmin Parkin, Jeremy Page, and Ali Siadat, solidifying their unique musical vision.

1. From Mike (Bass): ‘Ascensionism’ by Sleep Token
Sleep token is my favourite current band. This song is an intoxicating, emotional blend of genres. Punishingly heavy and beautiful at the same time.
2. From Ali (Drummer): ‘Crackity Jones’ by Pixies
Frank Black’s screaming and barking like a dog makes my inner child dance with wild abandon. A side note on the band Pixies is that they are collectively our favourite band.
3. From Ali (Drummer): ‘Pyramid Song’ by Radiohead
This song sounds like a dream in real time. I love the odd time – I don’t have a clue what the time signature is, which is weird for a drummer but I just don’t care, I’m instantly along for the ride.
4. From Molly (keys, vocals): ‘Baby’s Arms’ by Kurt Vile
This song is just so sad and beautiful. I feel like it’s a perfect road trip song because it’s so nostalgic.
5. From Jasmin (keys, vocals): ‘I Never Learnt to Share’ by James Blake
I love the contrast in this song of the acapella harmonies at the beginning, and the heavy electronic drop near the end. It’s a song where you don’t know where it’s going but every layer weaves in seamlessly. It’s a journey worth taking every time.
6. Band’s Favourite: ‘Between the Bars’ by Elliot Smith
A hauntingly dark and beautiful piece of music by a master songwriter. The lyrics are poignant and poetic, the melody is gorgeous and the chord progression is perfect. There is also a beautiful cover of this song by Madeleine Peyroux that we highly recommend.
LUCKY 7: ‘Head Shrink’ by Mother Mother
We chose this song because we all feel a strong connection to it. The interplay between Ryan and Molly’s voices coupled with the lyrics that speak to mental health and the human condition, as well as the lasting impact of childhood trauma make this one an emotional doozy.
