BEDSIT – LUCKY 7

LUCKY 7 IS THE FEATURE WHERE WE ASK ARTISTS TO NAME THEIR 6 FAVOURITE SONGS BY OTHERS, AND A LUCKY 7TH SONG OF THEIR OWN…

Formed as a solo project in 2019 by singer-guitarist Tom Hockney, BEDSIT became a fully-fleshed band in 2021. Grounded by their shared love of grunge, the band allow their outrage and anguish to swell through their soul and their lyrics. Now a tight unit, the guys rock together and they pee together.

Bedsit Band

Loud distorted guitars and walls of feedback bring to mind Bleach era Nirvana, if the band were born in Kingston upon Hull. They have a punk abandon that brings to mind the Pistols or American post-Grunge band Cold. And they play the kind of music that scares young kids and school teachers, the kind that demands to be moshed too.

BEDSIT’s new EP ‘Dead Bands’ is about the chaos and uncertainty of modern times, the struggle for meaning and motivation. It’s also a celebration of the heritage of live music. From gigantic rockstars who inspired generations, to local artists who never got the exposure they deserved.

Over to Tom from the band with their Lucky 7…

1. NOTHING – ‘FAMINE ASYLUM’
I am obsessed with this whole record ‘The Great Dismal’, and this is just one track of many. The guitars are angelic. The vocals want to lull you to sleep while the driving drums and bass keep grinding your teeth. I’m always thinking of new ways I can use my voice in music to add variety and convey different emotions and tones, and Nothing give me a lot of inspiration.

2. DILLY DALLY – ‘I FEEL FREE’
Spearheading the grunge revival. Their songcraft and Enda Monk’s vocals keep me listening to this album over and over again.

3. FRANK SINATRA – ‘THAT’S LIFE’
The style! The class! And baritone to boot (like me). This is my go-to karaoke song.

4. SMASHING PUMPKINS – ‘SILVERFUCK’
An absolute bop. The dynamics are tremendous. Got to love a jam track with that freeing feel of improvisation. Peak grunge in my opinion.

5. GRANT HART – ‘IS THE SKY THE LIMIT?’
I listen to this song at night, alone. It’s the greatest live performance I’ve ever seen. I can’t say any more. Rest in peace.

6. CLAUDE DEBUSSY – ‘CLAIR DE LUNE’
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to comprehend the brilliance of this in the same way I can a fat guitar riff or a roaring drum beat – those I can be inspired by and attempt to recreate in my own way. However, the majesty of this feels as within reach as the moon and the stars. And to listen to it is to become awash with emotion. It’s painfully beautiful.

LUCKY 7: BEDSIT – ‘DEAD BANDS’
This is a love song to the scene – the lineage of live music, how creativity and passion flows through generations. It’s dedicated to some local legends who sadly split, and to international giants who inspired generations of kids to learn an instrument and carve a path for themselves with music.

BEDSIT release their debut ‘Dead Bands’ EP via their own Forever Underdogs label. The EP was mastered by Pete Maher whose list of credits include Nick Cave, Nine Inch Nails, Pixies and Garbage.
