LUCKY 7 IS THE FEATURE WHERE WE ASK ARTISTS TO NAME THEIR 6 FAVOURITE SONGS BY OTHERS, AND A LUCKY 7TH SONG OF THEIR OWN…

Delivery are the hot new band from Melbourne, Australia. The up and coming garage-punks mix fast-paced, spiky, angular garage riffs with laser-tight drumming and driving, catchy melodies.

But what inspires Delivery to deliver? Bad Tattoo finds out with their Lucky 7.

1. Ride – The Vines

Rebecca Allan (bass, vocals): I chose this song half for the song, half for the film clip. When it comes to music, as hard as I try I never seem to stray too far from rock. The Vines rock and that’s definitely also what I aim to do when writing music. A truly killer music video to accompany the song too, love the vibe of 20 bands learning your song to be in a film clip… I also just watched ‘Meet Me In The Bathroom’ so currently re-going through an early 2000’s garage-rock phase.

2. The Last Note 最 後 的 音 符

Sam Harding (guitar, vocals): I came across this album a while ago and really rinsed it while driving around town. I’ve only recently started playing it again, and this first track is incredible. I’m a big fan of using one or two chords and repetitive patterns to create songs. The arrangements on this album all seem to lack any traditional drums, but I think it’s that fact that makes the rhythm feel so turbo. The songs are sung in Cantonese so I have no idea what the lyrics are, but doing this has reminded me to go and find out.

3. Anything Could Happen – The Clean

Lisa Rashleigh (guitar, vocals): Well it’s just such a classic isn’t it? The lo fi-ness, hooky vocals and catchy little riffs in this song (amongst all of their others) just scratch my brain in all the right places. The trickle down effect of The Clean’s influence is pretty much impossible to ignore where we come from. I think we find it in a lot of the music we’re most drawn to in some form or another.

4. Look A Ghost – Unwound

Daniel Devlin (drums): In anticipation for Primavera Sound this June I’ve been diving back into the Unwound discography. Sara Lund has become a massive inspiration to me when listening back to records like ‘Leaves Turn Inside You’ and ‘Fake Train’. Lund has an incredibly unconventional and refreshing approach to drumming that is really exciting to me. She always finds a perfect balance between flare and rhythmic playing that really scratches that itch for me… Much like a lot of the music Kill Rock Stars tend to put out. ‘Look a Ghost’ is a great example of this flare/rhythmic playing. Can’t wait to see it live in the flesh!

5. Evil Is Easy – The Intelligence

James Lynch (guitar, vocals): When we started Delivery, it was because I wanted to make a band to rip off The Intelligence. In my brain, Lars Finberg does the perfect combo of punk and pop, and it’s a sound that definitely was imbedded in our band’s psyche thanks to a bunch of Melbourne bands doing a similar thing. But as good as Lars, I’m not quite sure. Most of the chords in this song don’t really fit together but it also doesn’t sound discordant either, which is something I try to do as much as possible in Delivery.

6. Wrapped Up – Eddy Current Suppression Ring

James Lynch (guitar, vocals): It’s all fun and games trying to write songs that don’t repeat like you’d expect and have a million chords, but at the end of the day, sometimes two or three chords will do the job just fine. Best guitar solo of all time on this track. As someone who’s a bit of a believer that more is usually more, ECSR are pretty good at setting me straight.

LUCKY 7: Poor-to-Middling Moneymaking – Delivery

James Lynch (guitar, vocals): I said before when we started Delivery I was purely trying to pull tricks from The Intelligence. This was the first song we wrote for Delivery. I haven’t told anyone this, but the song title was a phrase in a review of an Intelligence album on a random blog. I don’t even think it is a phrase though, because now the only thing that comes up when you google those words is Delivery. Apologies to all the hard-working music writers out there. I also don’t think it really sounds like The Intelligence either, but lyrically, it wonders if it’s possible to make heaps of money without doing any work for it… which screams intelligence to me.
