LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask bands to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own. This week we feature the fabulous Disco Doom.
Disco Doom is the noise-rock project of Zurich-based Gabriele De Mario and Anita Rufer. They also continue the great tradition of bands we’ve featured who boast a totally awesome name – this may even be the best so far. There I’ve said it, Disco Doom win the names! Fortunately for Disco Doom their music is as exceptional as their moniker, with their latest release ‘Numerals’ taking you on psychedelic grunge love train. Mixing early Nirvana, with shades of Dinosaur Jr, Queens of the Stone Age and a sliver of Bowie, this is the kind of music that makes you feel like something special is about to happen. Winds in the east, mist coming in. Like somethin’ is brewin’ and bout to begin…

Why did we choose these songs?
I’m pretty sure this list would look totally different even tomorrow, and the limitation of six songs to represent the most influential music on us since we started Disco Doom is really tough. That’s why we really have to mention also the music of Moondog, Suicide, Pavement, Lower Dens, Women, Wire, Adze, Neil Young, US Girls, Dean Blunt, Brian Eno and bands of such labels like Exploding in Sound, Drag City, Siltbreeze, Jagjaguwar, etc.”
1. Africa Bambaata – ‘Death Mix’
What an awesome piece of music. What they do here is musically so rich, with a perfect roughness, and just timelessly mind blowing.

2. Royal Trux – ‘Teeth’
Royal Trux were so important to discover for us, and they’re still amazing in what they do now in their separate entities (Neil Hagerty under his name, Jennifer Herrema as Black Banana).
The aspect of deconstructing rock, music history, and how they work with dirt – we’ll never get bored. They’re a band you can re-discover and it all changes every time.
3. Built to Spill – ‘When I’m Blind’
This song just blew us away when we heard it for the first time at the beginning of this year and we still think this is THE guitar of 2015.
Don’t get us wrong, this is not jamming, noodling around or guitar shredding – this guitar wants to survive. It’s working with the minimal and getting with it the strongest expression, pure bliss.
4. Inga Copeland – ‘Smitten’
She did this awesome song which makes you happy every time you hear it. The song seems so effortlessly put together, awesome. And the video she did to put the song online is just a wonderful statement too.
5. Guided By Voices – ‘Motor Away’
This is just one song of GbV and we could put hundreds of Pollard’s songs here. We adore his writing and his conviction to bring out so much music all the time, without controlling everything. It seems to us he’s so great in catching the very first moment of a song. And the line “When you free yourself from the chance of a lifetime” is just the best.
6. Kraftwerk ‘Computer Liebe’
With this song Kraftwerk generated such emotional music through machines, it’s perfection. We listen to it and re-listen and listen again and our brain vanishes into it and out of it every time.
LUCKY 7. Disco Doom – ‘Shannon’
‘Shannon’ was the last song we recorded for Numerals and was written very fast. Nevertheless there is this duality in it and a moment of abstraction which we really love. it perhaps tells best what fascinates us the most in doing what we are doing musically.
