MONOFONES – Lucky 7
LUCKY 7 is the feature where we ask artists to name their 6 favourite songs by others, and a lucky 7th song of their own…

THE MONOFONES collectively are a rumbling drum, a heavily distorted guitar which sounds like a dying tractor and a female voice by which you wouldn’t want to be reprimanded. Known for their unique take on the garage rock scene, the Swiss trio produce loud and wild 60’s garage-trash served with a pinch of punk.

The Monofones

Bring the Fire

Their live shows are sweaty and entertaining and have become legendary not only for the different kind of lo-fi inferno they create but also the on-stage fireworks they use and a drummer who sets fire to his cymbals whilst he plays. With a furiously high-tempo, THE MONOFONES bring a live a performance that has to be witnessed to be believed.

Over to the band for their Lucky 7…

1. THE SONICS – STRYCHNINE
A brilliant garage punk song and milestone in rough rock and roll. Pounding drums, fuzzed guitars and wild, screaming vocals. That’s all you need for a good song, right?

2. THE MONSTERS – PSYCH OUT WITH ME
An eye-opener in the sense of showing an even wider transformation of garage punk to modern days, and an intense stage performance.

3. THE NEVER EVERS – CHEAP THRILLS
Our drummer El Miguel’s previous band (The Never Evers) was, of course, a musical inspiration. Without this band, the drum sound of The Monofones, and therefore the sound in general, would be very different.

4. RANDY – PROLETARIAN HOP
The combination of raw, wild sound with a catchy tune was like a revelation when first heard. The Swedes just know how to write catchy stuff, don’t they? (Yes, we also like ABBA.)

5. SNAKERATTLERS – SHE’S STRANGE
A brilliant mix of surf-influenced swampy rock n roll. Basically, all the Snakerattlers songs are brilliant [Check out their Lucky 7, Ed]. Best drummeress ever; weirdest singer ever. Yes, we admit, we are deeply and utterly in love with Snakerattlers.

6. BAD MOJOS – DIGGIN’ MY OWN GRAVE
Straight forward punk rock from our hometown Bern. Excellently distorted vocals, perfectly lousily recording, no guitar solos and shit, just 1:17 minutes in your face.

LUCKY 7: THE MONOFONES – AHOI
It’s a song about tough sailors who got lost and don’t know where they’re heading with their ship. But since they’ve got enough rum on board, they don’t care too much. It’s a bit like when The Monofones drove to a show.
