SYTERIA NAME THEIR 6 FAVOURITE SONGS FROM OTHER ARTISTS AND A LUCKY 7TH OF THEIR OWN
Welcome to ‘Syteriaworld’. A realm of colourful, pounding and punked-melodic rock that is occupied by the Yorkshire-bred band Syteria. Formed by Jackie ‘Jax’ Chambers, of the legendary UK rockers Girlschool, alongside Argentine siblings Julia and Pablo Calvo, and Steph Dawson, Syteria have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
Ahead of the release of their new album ‘Syteriaworld’, Jax from Syteria gives us her Lucky 7th…
1. She Sells Sanctuary – The Cult
As soon as I hear that opening guitar riff I still get goose bumps. That trade mark 80’s flanged guitar that Billy Duffy used back then (and that most of us tried after hearing this song) making it almost psychedelic in sound. If that wasn’t enough to get me gripped, when the powerful impact of the whole band comes crashing in… Well, it gets me every time.
2. Killing Joke – Eighties
Here we go again with that very 80’s guitar sound, Geordie Walker had an incredibly powerful, punky, yet very melodic style.
Another guitar riff that as soon as you hear the intro you’re all in and for me, straight onto the dance floor. Takes me back to those great times.
3. Blondie – Heart Of Glass
One of the best bands ever, so melodic with an element of punk, pop, rock, disco, rap, they had everything. This one was so experimental for its’s time but it paid off and was a massive hit for them. A band that I could have picked any of so many songs, they were just so good.
4. The Skids – Into the Valley
From the moment that filthy bass kicks in to that incredible guitar riff and sound, it has power, excitement, fantastic words, a sing along chorus along and a catchy la la la outro. And who can forget Richard Jobson’s unique dancing style, which he still does to this day!
5. Stiff Little Fingers – Alternative Ulster
Another unmistakable intro that makes the whole audience scream with delight when they hear it live as they know they’re up for a song of air punching and a great sing along chorus. That Jake Burns growly vocal that’s so passionate, so strong and still is to this day!
6. Sisters Of Mercy – Temple Of Love
An incredible mix of styles, goth meets Israel as the track featured Ofra Haza .A band from Leeds, the city I grew up in, so saw them many times live. Another riff I wish I’d written on guitar.
LUCKY 7. Syteria – Silent Minute (Pause For Peace)
A song about Major Tudorpole asking Winston Churchill for the people of the UK to stand in silence for 1 minute at 9pm every night during the war, whether it was Contemplation, Prayer or Meditation. This song seems to resonate with people live when we play it, maybe it makes them pause just for that moment in the same way? A lyric video to go with the song so the words stand out.
