Formed by Tommy in 1986, Prong are pioneers of the urban metal scene and a clear influence on groups such as Korn and Nine Inch Nails. Tommy’s hard hitting music never compromises on melody or hides from a killer riff, which has kept him at the forefront of thrash metal for over 30 years. ‘Wishful Sinful’ – The Doors
“‘Wishful Sinful’ by The Doors is not really that obscure of a song, but it has a lot of unusual characteristics. It’s a song that appears on their most negatively criticized record ‘The Soft Parade’. A lot of Doors fans don’t like this album. One of the issues that sets this song apart is that it’s entirely written by guitarist Robbie Krieger. What’s also interesting is that it features a string section accompaniment – that was unusual for The Doors. I find it very haunting and perfect for what I think is one of their greatest songs. This whole album, regardless of what critics have said, is their strongest and my favourite. It’s one of my desert island choices for sure.
I live in Los Angeles now, and when I’m hiking in Griffith Park I find ‘Wishful Sinful’, and the whole record, a perfect soundtrack to the experience. This song in particular, musically and lyrically, reflects the heat, the eeriness and the beauty and decadence of the place. It’s not a Morrison lyric (another unusual fact), his lyrics are amazing of course, but I find it kind of deep and thought provoking, as simple and short as it is. Sometimes I sense that the song is about a desire to return to the womb. But with the water, sun and evil references it has a lot of Southern California imagery built in.
The music is pop but has a very dark complexity to it. I hear a bit of Bella Bartok dissonance thrown in to the psychedelic rock drone. Very cool! I highly suggest you check this track out, especially if you’re visiting fantastic LA!”
