Extreme SIX has been 15 years in the making. Since the first teasers began to drop, Bad Tattoo have been reporting on the band’s epic return to recorded music. We were the first rock site to write about the teasers. We’ve featured RISE co-writer Jordan Ferreria, with a full interview coming soon. We were also fortunate enough to get a pre-release copy of SIX, where we gave it a full-marks in our in-depth review. Click here to check out the full Bad Tattoo Extreme SIX review.

Extreme SIX has wowed critics but there is an even more important voice, that of the fans. It therefore feels fitting that Bad Tattoo has opened this up to them, to share and celebrate this special release. We therefore asked Extreme fans from all over the world for YOUR SIX reviews, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response.

So good or bad, we published them all! Here are the Extreme SIX fan reviews…

“Thirty four years since their debut, Extreme return with their own brand of hi-octane rock n’ roll. And what a return it us! Six has all the energy you expect from the band with a surprisingly diverse range of styles and influences spanning the entire album. An excellent and vibrant album from start to finish.”
Darren Woolf, UK

“The very long awaited SIX album has finally arrived and once again EXTREME have managed to pile in a huge amount of eclectic songs (in a very traditional Extreme style). With a perfect balance of hard hitting rock belters to radio friendly singalongs, and even some experimental electro vibes thrown in for good measure, it’s clear that Extreme have taken all their 38 years of experience and come up with a very cool record. One that gets better with every listen. As a whole the album may not be as ‘classic Extreme’ as Porno or 3 sides due to time apart, or coming at it from differing evolved influences over the years, but there’s certainly a lot to enjoy and damn you can’t ignore the incredible talent of each member, pushing themselves to the max to prove Extreme still have what it takes to produce some excellence in this recent drought of genuine rock and roll music. Bring on the live tour!”
Chris Perkins, Loving Ink Tattoos, New Forest UK

“Back in the early 90s, I fell in love with Extreme for two main reasons: Nuno Bettencourt’s soulful and virtuosic guitar mastery, and their surprising eclecticism, revealed on their second album, Extreme II: Pornograffitti. That album taught me, with glee, that they’re not your everyday “hair metal” act; expect the unexpected from this band, with sounds from across the musical spectrum. And I got all that out of the new album, Six. Much like they did on Pornograffitti, they steamroll us with a few straight-up, blazing hard rockers, before they hit us with something more subdued, and then the eclectic fun really begins! Highlights? The sheer, in-your-face rock and roll energy of those first three tracks, complete with face-melting solos filled with soul, speed and whammy-bar screams. The joy of singing along with the up-tempo, 12-string acoustic track “Other Side of the Rainbow.” The Beatles-esque heartbreak of the acoustic “Hurricane.” The Muse-like turn of “X-Out.” And the Queen-inspired anti-“We Are the Champions” anthem, “Here’s to the Losers,” which closes the album. After 15 years between records, it’s a truly triumphant return, with tons of the unexpected I’ve come to expect from Extreme.”

“OMG, fellas!! 15 years in the making, but SO FREAKING worth the wait!! I sat down and listened to the album last night and currently my FAVORITES are Hurricane, Small Town Beautiful and Other Side of the Rainbow!! I tend to gravitate towards the songs that speak to me, touch my heart and move me in some way, but this album has something for everyone!! SIX is chock full of songs that are relatable to everyone’s journey in this crazy thing we call LIFE!! A veritable smorgasbord of tunes where the boys of Extreme put “balls to the wall”,  giving us EVERYTHING they got and leaving it all out there!! AND whoever was in charge of marketing this, hats off to you as well!! GENIUS I tell ya!! SIX is gonna be the BEST ALBUM of 2023, no doubt about it!! See you boys out on the tour!! Gonna be EPIC!!”
Gina Chastain, Jacksonville, Florida

Six is the heaviest but above all the most adventurous album studio in Extreme’s discography. What makes the interest and the force of this album is its great diversity of music styles with Extreme’s unique trademark. This musical journey is the most exciting thing since a long time. A true gift for music lovers! That was really worth the wait finally.”
Fred Carpentier, Paris France

“I’ve been an Extreme fan ever since I bought the 3 Sides CD by chance, I’ve been hooked ever since! All Extreme albums have been brilliantly eclectic and Six is no different. After waiting 15yrs, this is an incredible album, an absolute cracker!! All genres are covered as usual and I can hear the multiple influences (Beatles, Queen, Muse, EVH) but also Nuno’s solo albums (which is a very good thing). The rock tracks are amazing with Thicker Than Blood being a memorable standout for me… hearing every pick in the awesome solo blows my mind! Another standout is Hurricane (ballad about Nuno’s best friend passing) and Beautiful Girls is 100% summer pop…it shouldn’t work, especially with Nuno’s ludicrous guitar solo but they nail it. Great to hear Nuno trading vocals with Gary throughout the album too. Extremely solid rhythm section with Pat and Kfig in fantastic form! Six will be on constant repeat for me, I can’t wait to find more amazing gold nuggets in this well deserved overdue masterpiece!”
Simon, South Australia

“I have followed Extreme since their early club days in the late 80s, and this is by far their best collection of music ever produced by the band. Returned are the days of a record with many layers, colors, and styles as in the glory days of Led Zeppelin, and Queen. We know they can rock it out with numbers like Rise and #Rebel but the real gift is the eclectic nature of the band’s songwriting like with the Other Side of the Rainbow which may be the catchiest and most emotional track i have ever heard. Congratulations for delivering the goods without a single disappointment!”
Barry K, Boston MA USA

“Every day another song of this album stuck in my head! I think it is a very great album!!”
Bianca VDN

“It’s superb. The recording is excellent, Nuno is smoking and present on every track, Cherone sounds better than ever before and this is easily my hard rock record of the year so far. For Nuno’s part, this entire album has to be in large part a loving homage to EVH. So many nods to Van Halen, both subtle and overt. Totally love it. Fellow guitar players and guitar music fans will know exactly what I mean. It’s there in every track. Bravo, well worth the wait, but selfishly wanted even more ExtremeSix is by any reasonable measure a terrific effort by a band that is firing on all cylinders.”
Joe Satchton, Hong Kong

Six is an absolutely amazing album. From the prerequisite rockers to tear-inducing ballads to techno funk metal, this album is sweeping in it’s scope and diversity. While it pays homage and incorporates elements from their previous 5 albums, there are new venues the band explores (the heavy techno funk of “X Out” for example), proving they are still moving forward nearly 35 years after their first release. Gary’s vocals are perhaps the best they have ever been, and Nuno just destroys every song whether he is plugged in or playing acoustic. Of course they are both supported by one of the most impressive rhythm sections in rock, Pat and K-Fig, who are talented enough to take on the Herculean task of providing the solid foundation for Nuno’s six string pyrotechnics and Gary’s acrobatic vocals to build upon. Everything from the lyrics, vocals, production, and engineering have created what certainly is one of the finest albums of 2023. Every second we Extreme fans have waited these past 15 years was totally, utterly, completely worth it.”
Jodi Wisneski

“Love Six… it’s mature and playful at the same time, fresh air of good old rock music… top performance, lyrics deep and human… Extreme has always something new to offer… just have to notice that it would be soooo nice if 2023 tour have stretched a little bit to south-east of Europe…”
Love, Inga from Croatia!

Porno = 1
Six = 2
III Sides = 3
It gets a medal!”
Jason Cav

“It’s a Masterpiece of fabulous and diverse rock and roll, if not the best, rock n roll music created in the last two decades, and from one of the best, and most diverse and talented, and underrated I might add, rock n roll bands of the last thirty years…..period!!!! ty fellas for continuing to share your God given talents and gifts with us, I for one am so grateful and blessed to be able to experience
it!!. thank you, thank you, thank you”
Mark Steven Watson

SIX is one of the most eclectic albums you will ever listen to crossing as many genres possible from a rock band that has aged better than a French wine. This has to be Gary Cherone’s best music with vocals that would rival even the great Freddie Mercury. Nuno leads the way with mind blowing riffs and solos that makes time stop. All this backed up by the amazing rhythm section of Pat (bass) and K Figg (drums) as well as with backing vocals that don’t just sit behind the lead, they hold their own throughout the album delivering the icing to top the many flavored cakes. SIX takes you on a journey of unforgettable heavy rock power mixed with emotional acoustic tunes and even pop songs that could become classic hits in their own rights. SIX has shown a maturing of the band and for me, long may that continue. I love the album and it gives me something different every time I listen to it. For me, this is potentially their best yet.”
Mat Bull

“I have been eagerly awaiting the release of ‘Six‘ along with many other Extreme fans and have to say the album does not disappoint. To me, this is what Extreme does best, put out a new album with a variety of different sounds which keep you second guessing. Some beautiful acoustic numbers and banging hard rock tracks (#Rebel being my stand out track) with everything in between. A solid return after 15 years. This album is definitely not a 6, more a 10/10.”
Brian Scouler, Glasgow Scotland

“The new album by Extreme, “Six“, is finally here after a 15-year wait, and it is absolutely what fans were waiting for, and more! I know that many reviewers will focus on the songs themselves, (for the record, “#Rebel” is my favorite Extreme song of all-time, and definitely my favorite on this album), what I want to focus on are the amazing human beings in this band. Gray Cherone’s vocals are off the charts here, and his lyrical genius is on full display. I know lyrics are deeply personal in some cases, but I would love to know what place in his soul those “X Out” lyrics come from. Nuno Bettencourt continues to set the bar for guitarists, and has some otherworldly solos, but his vocals on this record are something to behold as well, expanding the scope beyond what he has done before, especially on “The Mask.” Pat Badger is on fire the whole album. He really has some great moments on “Banshee” (which he co-wrote) and “The Mask“, and he always hold things together and drives them with passion. Speaking of passion, I know that this album is the moment that Kevin Figueiredo has been waiting for. I was fortunate to have a brief conversation with k-Figg a few years ago after a show, and I mentioned that I could tell that he really wanted this new stuff to come out so he could really make his mark within the band. He said he really appreciated me saying that, and I told him I couldn’t wait to hear the new stuff. I think you’ll agree when you listen to “Six” that k-Figg certainly left that mark, and then some, with “#Rebel” being the absolute standout as far as I’m concerned. When Sammy Hagar asked Gary Cherone what direction they were going with this new music, Gary replied “Extreme doesn’t have a direction.” They were “Everything Everywhere All at Once” before it was a movie, so be prepared to take a journey of cinematic, epic proportions with “Six“. I think you’ll enjoy the ride!”
Spencer Chestnutt, West Point, Virginia USA

“I’ve been listening to Six as much as I can in a house full of kids! I love it, Gary has a bit more grit in his voice as an older gent, Nuno is still an alien with ten hands, Pat and Kevin are an incredible rhythm section as ever.Good mix of hard rock tunes, earnest ballads, a bit of electro and some proper Extreme cheesiness towards the end. I wouldn’t have them any other way! Not gonna lie – Beautiful Girls is a banger!”
Luke Howe

“This album kicks. From tried and tested to new areas of exploration. Some heavy rock some pop based. All together this album is amazing. Cherone’s vocals are dead-on with tremendous range. Inspiring memories of Freddie Mercury at times. Harmonies are Queen-like. Badger and K Fig tight. Bass & the drum kit move the songs along. Some Synth from Nuno and a seven string N7 for low frequency. And then there’s the “you know you’re going to get your face ripped off” element every time Nuno starts a solo. “Six” is a “Ten”, “Eleven” in Spinal Tap lore.”
Craig Lewis, Springfield, IL USA

Extreme Six is EVERYTHING the fans wanted and more. AND maybe some things we didnt KNOW we wanted. It takes you on musical journey from start to stop..one that you wont seen forget (or want too!!!). It is full of diversity, but undoubtedly 1000% still and Extreme record!!!!”
Carl Myers

SIX has a fresh updated sound yet there is still no doubt that you are listening to Extreme. Everything that makes them who they have always been is front and center, the groove, the harmonies, the mind-blowing guitar work. It is refreshing to know they didn’t try to cash in on some rehashed nostalgia album. It proves they are serious about new music and pushing themselves and rock and roll forward. SIX literally has something for everyone. Living up to the name, it is a pretty extreme collection of songs. There is a genre-bending assortment of vibes ranging from country, pop, calypso, industrial to straight-forward rock with one key commonality…guitar is the star. Nuno is on a mission to revive guitar and SIX is a testament to that goal. Nuno shares a lot more vocal responsibility on this album which I think adds a bit of freshness and flavor. Let’s face it, Gary, Nuno and Pat are all amazing vocalists in their own right. This is why their harmonies are so great and quintessential to the Extreme sound. Gary has never sounded better. The eclectic collection of tracks allows him to showcase his vocal prowess like never before. Rock and Roll, you have been put on notice. The boys from Boston are back and they are ready to feed the starving faithful a steady diet of guitar and fire!”
Joe Lynch, New Jersey USA

“At first I wasn’t thrilled with the second half of the album, but man, after a few spins of it in the car, I’m REALLY loving it!!”
Mike Oliver

Six is a surprising record! All over the place with ballads, heavy stuff, modern stuff, blistering guitar solos, well-worked harmonies, eightish synths and even some fun-at-the-beach pop. This all makes it an unique record in Extreme’s catalog, prominently showcasing Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone’s fantastic partnership on top of the great rhythm section of Pat Badger and Kevin Figg. And that gorilla on the cover’s indicating “don’t mess with us” while at the same time wearing a slight provocative smile. Go listen!”
Marcos Farah Nagato

“I must say i am hugely dissapointed by the muddy sound, especially after Punchline and Saudades were so bonedry and aggressive sounding. I accepted the ripp of from stone temple pilots for Rise, love the guitar, miss the bass and Pats vocals which seem to be missing on some tracks. And i utterly hate the 2 last tracks. Beautiful Girls is cringe…”
Stefan Strittmatter, Germany

“Love! Love! Love! I’m obsessed!”
Kirsty McNeil

“By far the best Album I have heard in 10 years hands down finally a amazing rock album!!
Can’t wait to see them in Vancouver!!!”
Stephane Chartier, Canada

“Was hoping for more funk and miss the horns from Pornograffitti but I love the album!”
Shannon Pederson

“We waited a long 15 years but six did not disappoint!!! A combination of old school Extreme with a whole new sound for today. Every song is uniquely Extreme… A little funk, a little jazz and a whole lot of Rock!!! Each track takes you on an adventure this is not an album full of similar sounding music every track is completely different and completely Extreme!!! Well done boys!!!”
Gina Riccardo-Marandino

“Absolutely great record, but due to process of elimination my least favorite of theirs. I mean we only have 6 to choose from in 34 years. Is what it is.”
Erik Schiavo, USA

“An excellent album with some missing pieces. Many of the songs seem to be missing Pat’s harmonies/backing vocals. Some gripes aside, I like all the songs and love several. The first four tracks are up there with some of Extreme’s best. Rise, #Rebel, Banshee and Other Side of the Rainbow are perfect. I even like Beautiful Girls (but again it needs more of Pat’s backing vocals/harmonizing and the song would be much different sounding and more fan apprecited I think). 8/10″
Thomas Cocco, Pennsylvania USA

“9/10 …. I deducted a point for Banshee as it really does sound like a gazillion rock tunes. But the rest is explicitly perfect. Arguably their finest album since Porno.”
Carlos Mendoza, Barcelona Spain

“I feel what the band has done & is to do an album that will please everybody which won’t be possible. I love almost every song on Six but if you’re looking for another Pornograffitti ANY album will be hard to compete. And yes, now, i can say i do like Beautiful Girls however still not a fan of The Mask due to it’s double meaning lyrics but still gonna love seeing them in concert.”
Matthew D’Ath, Australia

“Extreme fans know that Extreme always surprises us. That being said, Listen to it on a long drive, and give it a good chance… All great bands grow on you… and I can’t think of a better example than Extreme… Yes, it will grow on you… take a chance and listen more… They’re still the greatest.”
Tommy Ro

“Best album out in a LONG time!!”
Angela Copeland-Huicek

“A solid blend of Extreme, Nuno’s projects, homage to Edward and Sir Brian, great songwriting and a pop hit. What could go wrong? My fav part of the album starts with “The Mask” and goes on to the last song.”
Arthur Ka, Warsaw Poland

“Love, love, love it!”
Gunther Goosens

“Amazing record, with this album, Extreme proves once again why they are who they are and this effort totally and definitely saves the state of rock n roll and hard rock today. Hopefully we will not have to wait another 15 years for a masterpiece, although if the next album comes after 15 more years, I’ll gladly wait.”
Maksim Mendez Dragan, Mexico

“So boring … Such a disappointing pop record (except one tune : X Out) : this record sounds scratchy … I go back to listening Shad’s 5ive starring Kevin Figueiredo : much more interesting than this sanitized music.”
John-Ross Ewing, France

“Expect the unexpected; Extreme always has something up their sleeves to make their fans do a double take. I love this album, just what the world needs right now pure delicious Rock and Roll mixed with some thought-provoking lyrics and dancing at the beach fun. I cannot express how happy I am, being a fan from the beginning and totally biased as I’m from their home state, the release day was better than a pony on Christmas. I’d say Here’s to the Losers is my favorite track but I love all of the songs almost equally. I’m so proud to be an Extreme fan, always have been always will be – you deserve all the love you guys are getting and more!! See you on the tour!! Let’s Goooooo!!!! xoxo “
Liz, Revere (MA)

“Good… but fell short of expectations. but….to me most of the songs are 7.5/10s….all solid…but songs with the cool riffs have flat sounding (not pitch) melodies…eg Banshee and Rise….and the more memorable songs melodically are the ballady ones…it’s just missing something for me that takes it from good to great. I was hoping they were holding back a couple of ‘great’ songs before they released the album…something a bit more spectacular or proggy or something…”
Richard Moseley, Canberra Australia

“Album of the year!”
Slattery Min Benja, Melbourne Australia

“Six is a great album. Defiantly shows that Rock is still alive and kicking.”
Doug Blois

“I am loving each song in SIX! Such a diverse album! To my opinion it really gives the feel of them taking us with them in their journey of emotions, creativity and feels. I listen to all Extreme albums very frequently and i find that Six too is same as complex and simple and each song different from any other songs in their albums. Six encompasses all the emotions one could feel while listening to music! The more i listen to each song, the more I find it to be true! It is indeed Extreme signature!”
Aferdita Sadiku, Albania

“I have listened to SIX numerous times since the full release and I just can’t get enough of it dedicated small town beautiful to my wife it’s her, just love this album and I hope it doesn’t take 15 years for another album. I read years ago that Nuno and Gary have a lot of songs written, let’s put them out.”
Francis Buffone, New York USA

“There’s a reason why this album is #1 on the hard rock charts. The songs are amazing from start to finish and SIX SELLS.”
Mal Salman, Sydney Australia

“Wow this is going to be one of my favourite all time albums and my fav Extreme album, this is what I hoped a follow up to VH3 would be.”
James Guy

“So to start just thank you!!! You are the group that makes me dream the most for 30 years. Well I could make pages but the goal is to talk about Six so here is my opinion. I’m recovering at the moment (nothing serious) but suddenly the album couldn’t have been better. The 4 singles drove me crazy and I couldn’t wait to hear the more. They were so good then the album arrived and I was confused at the beginning telling myself “shit that’s not what I’m wanted from Extreme“. But since I loved Extreme I listened and listened again… and the mega slap has arrived! Extreme are even better than I thought! Yet we were starting from very high. Extreme are timeless band that does what it loves and does it better than anyone else. Beautiful Girls, who at the first listen I thought “ho no” became a great song in my ears. I have no preferences in your albums, the 6 are different and that’s your strength because despite everything it’s still EXTREME! And for me the group that influenced me the most, and I never get tired of listening to any title! Just thanks for existing guys!!”
Gregory Jacq, France

Thanks to everyone who took part, here’s to the losers, here’s to the Extreme fans. Here’s to Extreme.
